I-Beam:
This WF iron is shaped like a capital letter 'I', as the name suggests. They are generally used in industrial applications and have tapered flanges. Shaped I-shaped WF iron comes in two different styles, one has a parallel flange surface (width), while the other has a slope on the inner flange surface (S-beam).
W-Beam:
This is similar to I-beam and is also called 'wide beam'. They have straight flanges and are most often used in residential construction.
H-Beam:
This is generally heavier and longer than I-beam. Looks like a capital letter 'H', they have longer flanges. Often, this term is used interchangeably with I-beam, so this is sometimes confusing. H-rays have nets and flanges that have the same thickness in many cases.
Channel:
Like half of the I-beam, it has a C-shaped cross section. The top and bottom of the beam have a sloping surface flange that comes out only on one side of the beam. They are used in supporting lighter loads because they are not as strong as other beam shapes.
